A novel biodegradable film, BiONLY™ from Xiamen Changsu, has been successfully applied to all biodegradable tableware packaging of China Eastern, Air China and other airlines to help Chinese aviation enterprises practice the goal of plastic prohibition and China’s Carbon Goals.

According to the statistics of CAAC ( Civil Aviation Administration of China) , the passenger traffic volume of civil aviation in China has ranked second in the world for 15 consecutive years by 2020. With the increase of passenger traffic volume of civil aviation, the problem of billions of disposable plastic pollution has attracted extensive attention.

On May 25, 2021, CAAC officially announced that since 2022, the airport terminal and parking building will not actively provide non-degradable disposable plastic bags with an annual passenger throughput of more than 2 million (including) passengers. At the same time, supervise the supermarket, catering, passenger rest area and other areas in the terminal to prohibit the provision of non-degradable disposable plastic bags, non degradable disposable plastic straws, mixing rods, meals & cups and packaging bags. From 2023, the implementation scope will be further extended to national airports. Airlines are looking for alternatives to disposable plastics. Previously, degradable garbage bags, degradable straws and degradable tableware all had relatively mature solutions, while the material selection of aviation food packaging, straws packaging and fully biodegradable tableware packaging was in trouble. How to meet the requirements of food contact without affecting the user experience and taking into account the needs of degradation and carbon reduction has become one of the most tricky problems for airlines.

BiONLY^TM provides an ideal solution. It’s not only controllable degradation and can be completely degraded into water and carbon dioxide under certain conditions, but also has the features of easy to transport, storage, waterproof, high transparent, separated heat sealing bag making, good tensile strength and easy printing, similar with traditional plastic film. Meanwhile, it can avoid the disadvantage of paper packaging, such as invisible and poor waterproof.

In addition to making a breakthrough in degradable tableware packaging, BiONLY^TM has also been recognized by airlines in aviation food packaging, and has been applied to the first food packaging with  fully biodegradable film project of China Southern.

BiONLY^TM also is a kind of eco-friendly material for carbon reduction. Carbon emission is less than that of traditional fossil based plastics, such as PP, which is reduced by about 70%, help to achieve the China’s Carbon Goals while ensuring energy security.
